The Iowa Speedway is located in Newton, Iowa in the United States. This will be the second year that the circuit is part of the IndyCar Racing League calendar. It is an extremely new facility having just opened in 2006. The track features an asphalt surface with a circuit length of 1.4 km on the tri-oval portion. There are only 4 turns. Meanwhile, the circuit length is 2.09 km on the road course with involving 9 turns over 250 laps. In 2007 the race was won by Dario Franchitti of Andretti Green Racing featuring a Honda engine and a Dallara chassis.

The previous race in the Indy Car calendar was Round 7 which featured the Bombardier Learjet 550 from the Texas Motor Speedway. That race was dominated by Chip Ganassi Racing and the Penske Racing teams. Scott Dixon of New Zealand picked up another victory in a race that saw him hold the lead for 58 laps after Brazilian Helio Castroneves had been in control for 85. Dixon's teammate Dan Wheldon of Great Britain finished in 4^th place while Ryan Briscoe of Australia was 3rd for Penske Racing. The top two finishers in that race mirror how the drivers' standings sit at this time with the aforementioned Dixon in first place with 284 points while Castroneves is second with 249.

Danica Patrick has really struggled of late after her victory in Round 3 as she has finished just 2 of her last 4 races with a 9^th and 10^th place finish being all she has to show for them.
