Force India are the newest team to join the f1 racing family and 2008 will be their debut. The are the first team from the nation of India to ever field a team and as a result India was awarded a race, the Indian Grand Prix which will be held in 2010. They are based at Silverstone in the UK.
Force India F1 came to live at the end of 2007 when investors purchased the former Spyker F1 team. Prior to Spyker F1, the team had been known as Jordan Grand Prix back in the 1990's. For this reason the headquarters remain at Silverstone despite the Indian ownership of the team. The head investors were billionaire doctor Vijay Mallya along with Michiel Mol. Mol had been involved with the team when they were Spyker F1 last season. Among the notable drivers who participate with the team during their days as Jordan were Rubens Barrichello, Giancarlo Fisichella, Damon Hill, Eddie Irvine, as well as Michael and Ralf Schumacher.
In 2007 Spyker F1 used the Ferrari engine and ran under the flag of the Netherlands. Among the drivers employed during the season were Adrian Sutil, Christijan Albers and Markus Winkelhock. Spyker would participate in 17 races from the Australian Grand Prix to the Brazilian Grand Prix but the results were not very good. They produced no victories nor pole positions and their one highlight was being able to lead at one point during the 2007 European Grand Prix. Now that the 2008 season is upon them and the team is now know as Force India F1 there is much more optimism in the air. For the first time in 3 years there is financial stability and the team looks set to make some strides. The team principal is Colin Kolles while Mike Gascoyne will serve as chief technical and James Key as the technical director. Adrian Sutil is back and will be joined by Italian Giancarlo Fisichella as the two drivers while Liuzzi remains on as the test driver. He will be joined by Roldan Rodriguez and Giedo van der Garde in that capacity. The chassis used is the Force India VJM-01 with Ferrari once again supplying the engine.
The infusion of cash has certainly raised expectations that Force India F1 should be able to make a name for themselves this season. They have a good number of drivers on staff and Fisichella is certainly among the more experience drivers around. If the cars can hold up, they should produce a decent number of points in the constructors' championship. Follow Force India F1 all season long at www.watchlivef1.com.
